Principal Investigator

Paul Shearing

Paul Shearing is Professor of Sustainable Energy Engineering at the Department of Engineering Science and Director of the ZERO Institute at Oxford University. He holds the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Battery Technologies. His research interests cover a broad range of electrochemical engineering themes with a particular interest in the characterisation and understanding of materials for batteries, fuel cells and other energy applications. He was a founding investigator of The Faraday Institution, the UK’s independent institute for electrochemical energy storage research where he leads the LiSTAR and Safebatt research programmes. He is a major user of synchrotron and neutron facilities, and founded the UK STFC Global Challenge network in Batteries and Electrochemical Devices. 

 
 
 
Dr James Robinson

James Robinson

James is the Project Lead on the LiSTAR project based at UCL having recently completed a Royal Academy of Engineering UKIC Research Fellowship. James’ research interests include the development of advanced diagnostics for electrochemical technologies and the design of new battery systems.

 
 
 

Project Manager

John C. Hooper

John is a Project Manager with extensive experience delivering large-scale collaborative research programmes across academia and industry. He has managed complex UK and EU-funded projects involving multiple universities, industrial partners, and interdisciplinary teams, particularly within sustainable energy and formulation engineering.

His expertise includes project delivery, financial management, stakeholder coordination, business development, and strategic programme support. MBA and PRINCE2 qualified, John combines structured project governance with a strong appreciation for the challenges and opportunities of innovative research environments.
